Residents and businesses across North Lincolnshire will soon benefit from more reliable and efficient waste collections, thanks to a major council investment in nine brand-new refuse vehicles — a key part of transforming local recycling services.
This multi-million-pound investment underpins the rollout of a simpler, smarter recycling system, including the introduction of weekly food waste collections from April next year. It also supports the council’s plans to streamline household bins from five to three from April next year, making recycling easier and more convenient for residents.
Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “This is a significant investment in the future of waste and recycling services in North Lincolnshire. We are delivering better value for taxpayers by upgrading to modern, more reliable vehicles that will reduce running costs and improve service delivery. We also want to thank residents for their continued support in recycling — this investment is about making it easier for people to do the right thing, while ensuring services remain efficient and dependable.”
“We are once again listening to local residents and want to make sure we are responsive to their commitment to improving the amount of recycling they want to achieve.”
The new 26-tonne vehicles will replace older models, helping maintain weekly collections for around 76,500 households and more than 1,200 businesses. Each vehicle is fitted with Euro VI engines, which produce significantly lower emissions and offer improved fuel efficiency — reducing maintenance and operational costs.
Cllr Neil Poole, deputy leader of North Lincolnshire Council, added: “This investment is a big step forward. It’s not just about the environment — it’s about delivering a more efficient, cost-effective set-up that works better for residents and businesses.”
“Moving from five bins to three is a key part of this transformation, making recycling simpler and more accessible. These new vehicles will help us deliver that change smoothly and reliably.”
As part of the procurement process, the council hopes local companies will come forward and bid, helping ensure the investment benefits the wider North Lincolnshire economy.
The older vehicles being replaced will be sold, with proceeds reinvested into council services — ensuring every pound spent delivers maximum value.
