Karen began her career in social care at the age of 17, whilst studying. When she became a mum, she started her first job caring in the community.
Being a care worker allowed her to work flexibly, helping people in their homes, while also having the time to spend with her young family.
Employed as a care worker, like Karen, you will support people to live happy, independent lives, offering companionship and building relationships with the client and their family.
Caring in the community provides a real sense of personal achievement, making people’s lives easier by helping to get them up in the morning and feel their best, preparing food or administering medication.
As a care worker, there will be lots of opportunities to meet new people. You might assist the elderly in their own homes, or support those in need, which can be immensely satisfying.
Clients, including those with physical or learning disabilities, may need your help to accomplish their daily activities, including paying bills and buying shopping. You could be called on to support them using verbal prompts so they can complete tasks themselves or offer more comprehensive support.
With experience caring for people in the community, Karen quickly progressed and worked her way up to become a Registered Manager for the first time before turning 30.
As a manager in the care sector you will enjoy a varied role, co-ordinating a team, ensuring clients receive the best possible levels of care and making a hugely important contribution to their lives.
Reflecting on her 30 year career in care, Karen said:
“I love my job; no two days are the same and I have had the pleasure of meeting some of the most incredible people and enjoy working with an amazing team.
“I cannot imagine a future without working in care.”
