North Lincolnshire Council is encouraging residents and businesses to pledge to help clear up litter from across our area during the Great British Spring Clean 2024.

The UK’s largest mass-action environmental campaign, from 15 to 31 March, brings together individuals, community organisations, businesses and councils to get outdoors, get active and help make a difference to the environment on our doorstep.

Environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy who run the campaign is keen to stress litter picking can be accessible to everybody with the right resources. The charity is celebrating its landmark 70th year this year, so why not set yourself a fun #PlatinumPledge such as picking 70 items, spending 70 minutes in nature litter picking or if you feel ambitious picking 70 bags?

Last year’s Great British Spring Clean was a great success in North Lincolnshire resulting in over 1,000 bags of rubbish being collected by more than 200 individuals.

Having been involved right from the start, this will be the ninth year that North Lincolnshire Council has backed the campaign.

The aim is to get each and every person to ‘pledge a bag’. Whether that’s collecting a few bits of rubbish on the school run, getting your workplace to take part in a lunch hour litter pick or organising a weekend clean up with friends; it all helps.

Scunthorpe Litter Pickers are meeting on Saturday 16 March at 10.30am in Morrisons car park off Lakeside Parkway and will litter pick until 12 noon. All welcome to join. Jayne Clare, said:

“Everyone can make a difference, even if we all picked up just one item of litter. Every item counts in improving our environment.”

A post campaign survey from 2023 revealed that around 95% of people surveyed agreed they felt they had made a difference to their local area, and 91% said they felt part of a national movement that is taking action to tackle litter.

The council currently spends over £1m a year on cleaning up the area.

Make your pledge on the Keep Britain Tidy website  and show your support on social media with the hashtag #GBSpringClean and #BigBagChallenge.
