North Lincolnshire Council’s commitment to supporting families continues to make waves this summer, with the free swimming initiative for children and families proving a resounding success. Between 4-12 August alone, more than 2,100 local residents took advantage of the offer, with 1,061 children enjoying junior free swimming and 1,044 families participating in family swim sessions across local leisure centres.

The most popular venue, The Pods, welcomed over 1,400 swimmers, showcasing the community’s enthusiasm for accessible, healthy activities during the school holidays.

This initiative is part of a wider package of support for families, parents, and grandparents across North Lincolnshire. The council is also delivering:

  • The Summer Reading Challenge, encouraging children to explore books and boost literacy in a fun, engaging way.
  • The Fuelled Programme, offering free, nutritious meals and enriching activities to children eligible for free school meals.
  • A range of community events, play sessions, and cultural activities designed to bring families together and promote wellbeing.

Cllr Rob Waltham, Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “We know how important it is for families to have access to free, fun, and healthy activities during the summer holidays. The success of the free swimming policy shows how much it’s valued by parents, grandparents, and carers. It’s about making sure every child has the chance to enjoy their summer, stay active, and make lasting memories.”

Cllr Carl Sherwood, Cabinet Member for Safer, Stronger Communities – Rural, added: “This is about supporting our communities in practical ways. Whether it’s swimming, reading, or taking part in the Fuelled programme, we’re making sure families across North Lincolnshire have access to opportunities that are good for their health, wellbeing, and development.”
