North Lincolnshire is greener thanks to a generous donation of 500 hazel trees from Jones Food Company (JFC), owners of Europe’s largest vertical farm.

Branching out from their indoor farming work, JFC grew the trees at their Scunthorpe facility in just six weeks as part of a research and development project.

Grown to sustainable forestry standards and planted in biodegradable coconut husk, the company have now donated the trees to the council.

Most have been planted along Brigg Road in Scunthorpe, creating a publicly accessible green corridor that boosts biodiversity, improves air quality, and enhances the local landscape.

A selection has also found a home within the Humber Forest woodland creation project near Alkborough Flats. Although situated on private farmland, visitors can enjoy views of the new hazel grove from surrounding footpaths.

Cllr David Rose, cabinet member for environment, praised the initiative: “This partnership with JFC is a good example of how innovation and environmental responsibility can come together to benefit our local community.

“Hazels benefit bees and butterflies and feed birds and squirrels. I’m looking forward to seeing these trees flourish.”

James Lloyd-Jones, of JFC, said: “Sustainable innovation isn’t just about food – it’s about creating greener, healthier environments for all. These trees will support local wildlife, beautify public spaces, and stand as a reminder that small actions can have a lasting impact on people and the planet.”

The trees have been added to the council’s tree counter, which currently stands at more than 166,000 – well on the way to the ambitious target of 250,000 new trees planted across the area.

Anyone can plant a tree and add it to the counter to help create a green future for North Lincolnshire. If you are a business keen to help the council in its tree planting endeavours, or know of land suitable for planting, contact woodland@northlincs.gov.uk.
