Support for care leavers to become independent has been increased by 50 per cent.

Care leavers who are setting up their own home for the first time will be eligible for a grant of £3,000, up from the previous £2,000.

The support is being extended further, increasing the help care leavers get to ensure they live successful and independent lives.

Cllr Julie Reed, cabinet member for children, families and communities said: “We always strive to keep children in their families, in their homes and their communities, however there are times when this is not possible and those children that need our care and protection become ‘our children’ and we are their corporate parent.

“Like any parent, support doesn’t all end when our young people become more independent. Care leavers deserve the same life chances as any young person.

“The increase in the setting up home grant will help smooth the transition to independence as part of a wider support package for them to build careers, create families of their own and become part of their community.”
