A brand-new pay by foot system that is set to be installed at the Parishes multi-storey car park will bring an enhanced level of security, helping to crack down on the anti-social behaviour that occurs within the busy Scunthorpe car park.
The vital works are due to start as early as next week (Monday 29 July) and will involve the installation of vehicle access shutters and controlled access pedestrian doors, to provide increased security for all using the facility.
The new payment system will mean visitors will need to pay for their parking at a pay station before returning to their vehicle.
Installation of the new system will mean the Parishes car park will be closed from Monday 29 July until Friday 9 August.
Cllr John Davison, cabinet member for safer, stronger, communities (urban) said: “It is important that we keep our public assets safe for everyone to use and unfortunately the Parishes multi-storey has been the target of criminal damage and incidents of anti-social behaviour.
“These incidents will be not tolerated, and tighter security is paramount to ensure the safety of everyone who lives, works or visits our area.
“This is one of our busiest car parks for Scunthorpe and the first stop for many of our visitors and we want to ensure it is a pleasurable and safe experience. This further investment and development will be welcome news for our residents and motorists.”
The new system will be cashless, as are the rest of North Lincolnshire Council chargeable car parks, since the recent installation of the new micro parking machines that use smart payment technology and will use Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) that instantly detects vehicles as they enter.
Cllr Davison added: “The new technology is the latest addition to the council’s flagship two-hour free car parking policy – which also sees all day free parking on Saturdays and Sundays in the thousands of parking spaces available in Scunthorpe.”
Motorists who are only using the two hours free parking will not be required to use a pay terminal and will simply drive to the exit barrier which will automatically open.
The new system will allow blue badge holders to scan the bar code on their badge to allow them to still receive free parking.
Cinema users will be able to get free parking by logging their vehicle with the cinema upon entry.
This is a joint project between North Lincolnshire Council and the Police and Crime Commissioner with the security upgrade being promoted by the North Lincolnshire Community Safety Partnership (CSP), which includes North Lincolnshire Council, Humberside Police, Humberside Fire and Rescue, Ongo, the National Probation Service, NHS Humber and North Yorkshire ICB and the Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner.
To ensure the safe installation of the roller shutter doors and for essential maintenance and cleaning to take place the Parishes multi-storey car park will be closed from Monday 29 July until Friday 9 August.
ShopMobility will temporarily be relocating to St John’s Market on the ground floor, which brings a short-term change in their opening hours. Further information is available on the North Lincolnshire Council website.
