Two persistently noisy neighbours have received fines totalling nearly £1,700 after the council took them to court.
Following repeated complaints about loud music and parties at a property on Grosvenor Street, Scunthorpe, residents Jozef Dunka and Angela Horvathova were served with an Abatement Notice under Section 80 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
However, they continued to cause disturbances and officers from the council’s Envirocrime team, supported by Humberside Police’s Neighbourhood Team, executed a warrant at the address after witnessing excessive noise that could be heard in surrounding streets.
Their speakers, sound bar and television were seized.
On 17 March 2025, the pair were summoned to Grimsby Magistrates’ Court but failed to attend.
The case was heard in their absence, resulting in each receiving a £200 fine, an £80 victim surcharge, and £562.25 in costs – a combined total of £1,684.50 to be paid within 30 days. Additionally, the court granted a forfeiture order for the confiscated equipment.
Cllr John Davison, cabinet member for community wellbeing, said: “This is a successful result where we took decisive action following complaints from neighbours who simply shouldn’t have to put up with this kind of unreasonable behaviour.
“We will not tolerate this kind of anti-social behaviour within our communities and if the occupiers had engaged with us and acted responsibly, then the situation could have been resolved much earlier.”
North Lincolnshire Council is committed to combating noise pollution, having recently removed televisions, stereo systems, sound bars, and speakers from other problematic properties in the area.
