In line with national guidelines, the council has updated the backdating provision within its National Non-Domestic Rate (NNDR) policy for discretionary business rate relief in North Lincolnshire.
This means that businesses which have been successful for applying for rate relief can have the relief backdated to the beginning of the tax year in which they apply. Government funded discretionary relief can be backdated further if the applicant is eligible.
All discretionary relief cases require an application form which is then scored in accordance with the councils’ discretionary policy. A list of businesses awarded discretionary relief can be found on the business rates page.
Cllr Neil Poole, cabinet member for sustainable council, said:
“The discretionary business rate relief is there to support businesses in North Lincolnshire that need a helping hand, including charities, community groups, businesses in rural areas to name a few.
“Lots of businesses benefit from discretionary relief this each year. The updates to the policy now mean that any applications that are successful can be backdated to the beginning of the financial year in which the application was made.”
In 2023/24, 160 businesses received discretionary rate relief, and the council remain committed in helping local businesses prosper in North Lincolnshire through its discretionary scheme.
