North Lincolnshire Council is encouraging residents to be ‘litter heroes’ and get involved with clearing up litter from our area.
Eight fully equipped volunteer litter picking pods will be placed throughout North Lincolnshire to give anyone the opportunity, and tools to litter pick anywhere, at any time.
The pods will include bin bags, bag hoops, grabbers, gloves and hi-vis vests and will be situated in the following locations:
· Henderson Avenue
· Sheffield Park
· Memorial Gardens
· Home Zone, Percival Street
· Ashby Ville Nature Reserve
· Connect2 Cycleway, Enderby Road, Riddings
· The Arc, Westcliff
· The Parish Office, High Street, Burton upon Stather
The pods are really easy to use, simply take what equipment you need, pick as much or as little as you want into one of the red bags provided, then return the equipment and bag of litter back to the pod. Bags of litter can also be placed next to any council bin for collection, as well as next to the pod.
Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “These new volunteer pods are a great way for residents to show pride in our area by doing a litter pick while out and about, every bit helps and it makes a huge difference to the environment.
“We have some amazing volunteers and community groups who are as determined as we are to battle these litter louts which is why it is so frustrating that some people continue to think it is acceptable to drop litter in the first-place.
“However, now with this litter picking equipment readily available across North Lincolnshire it will be even easier for individuals to support the fantastic work our teams do.”
The council currently spend over £1m a year cleaning up the area. More than 2200 bins are already in place including a raft of recycling bins and fines have been increased for anyone caught littering.
The pod located at The Arc, Westcliff, Scunthorpe has been funded by Ongo.
Andrea Morley, sustainability manager at Ongo said: “When we were asked to get involved in this initiative we jumped at the chance. With over 10,000 homes in the region and a clear aim to be net zero by 2050, it was a no brainer for us.
“It’s great we can help towards tackling litter in our neighbourhoods and provide the tools needed to do so. This however would be no use without the hard work of amazing volunteers who I would like to thank for going the extra mile to improve where they live.
“We can’t wait to see the litter picking pods and the difference they’ll make.”
