The Neighbourhood Plan for Appleby is in the process of being approved and will be the first to be used by North Lincolnshire Council to shape future developments.
As the first Neighbourhood Plan to get the go ahead in North Lincolnshire, Appleby’s Plan will become part of the statutory development plan for the area. It will be used by the council when considering planning applications in the Appleby parish.
Following a referendum held on 21 March 2019 – the final stage of the process – residents voted in favour of the council using the Neighbourhood Plan for Appleby.
North Lincolnshire Council will now adopt the Neighbourhood Plan as part of the development plan. It will be published on the Neighbourhood Planning pages.
Appleby Neighbourhood Plan has been developed by a core of Steering Group members led by the parish council.
The local community has been engaged in the process throughout following a number of consultation events, questionnaires, surveys and a Visioning Day. The Plan has been through various formal stages, including an independent examination.
Nine other communities have been designated as Neighbourhood Areas and some are working towards developing their Neighbourhood Plans.

“Appleby will be the first community to have their Neighbourhood Plan formally approved in North Lincolnshire. This means they will have more control and influence on any future developments in their area including new houses and businesses over design principles.
“From now on, when planning applications for Appleby are submitted, the council will use the Neighbourhood Plan when making a decision.”

Residents on the electoral register in Appleby parish were eligible to vote in the referendum. They were asked “Do you want North Lincolnshire Council to use the Neighbourhood Plan for Appleby to help it decide planning applications in the neighbourhood area?”
90.45 per cent (142) voted in favour of a ‘yes’
9.55 per cent (15) voted in favour of a ‘no’
There are 465 people in the electorate and 157 ballot papers were issued. The turnout was 33.8 per cent.
