As part of North Lincolnshire Council’s multi-million pound transformation plan for Scunthorpe the former market site in the town centre is being developed to pave the way for further investment.

Work will start on Tuesday 26 May 2020 for the first phase which will see the existing structures demolished and the site made ready for a new development.

This follows the recent announcement of a major multi-million pound Government investment programme in Scunthorpe supported via the £3.6bn Towns Fund. A raft of proposals are being developed to change the face of the town and wider area, for which the council can access up to £25m to move the them forward.

On site at the former market, additional safety measures will be place on site following national advice and guidance regarding Covid-19. Safe social distancing policies will be implemented to protect staff, members of the public, and nearby residents and businesses.

Cllr Rob Waltham, Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said:

“Scunthorpe town centre has a huge amount of potential for investment and this site will open up prime business opportunities.

“There is still a way to go in combatting coronavirus, which is why it is vital that safety measures are followed and we all remain alert. We can protect jobs and plan for the future with works like this getting underway, supporting us to grow the economy and enable our communities to flourish.”

Whilst work is carried out, there will be footpath closures on Home Street and in front on the High Street until work is finished. Diversions will be in place for accessing the town centre.

The car park behind the old market will have limited spaces available whilst work is carried out. A list of all the car parks, can be found on the council’s website.

The development of the site will also be supported as part of Scunthorpe’s bid for the Government’s Future High Streets Fund, which is for bold new visions and projects that will transform high streets and make them fit for the future.

North Lincolnshire Council has a strong vision for how it would like to see Scunthorpe High Street transformed – with the ambition to create a centre for learning, living, leisure and business, amongst other areas for improvement.

Further details about the Future High Streets Fund are available on the Invest in North Lincolnshire website.

Cllr Waltham continues: “We have already seen major investment in the town centre thanks to the £60m transformation plans, including the opening of St John’s Market, the relocation of council offices, Ongo’s headquarters and the creation of the University Campus North Lincolnshire.

“Now we are in the process of forming Scunthorpe’s bid for Future High Streets Fund which could support the redevelopment of the site and the town centre for the future. Key steps have also recently been taken with progressing Scunthorpe’s Towns Fund investment to transform the town for the future, complementing current and future developments.”
