Reading Ahead is an adult reading scheme aimed at new and less confident readers, and those people who want to get back into reading.
The scheme is supported by the Reading Agency and delivered in partnership between North Lincolnshire Library Service and Adult Community Learning.
It has proved very popular as a way of promoting literacy and helping local learners with their reading skills. Many people have also found it an enjoyable way to break out of their reading comfort zone and to get into the habit of using their local library.
Readers taking part in the scheme receive ‘freebies’ along the way as a reward for reading six books over a set period of months. They can also read other things, such as poems, articles or shorter books such as the Quick Reads series, widely available at libraries.
Books need to be borrowed and returned through a North Lincolnshire library, and learners who have completed Reading Ahead will receive a certificate. We also hold an awards ceremony after the end of each scheme at Scunthorpe Central.
Reading Ahead 2018 began in January and concluded during June. Most people took part through their Adult Community Learning class. Some of the learners who completed the challenge were presented with their certificate by best-selling local author Kate Walker at this year’s presentation.
If you would like to take part in Reading Ahead 2019, or would just like to know more about the scheme, please ask at your local library or contact Emma Prideaux or Lynda Conlon at Scunthorpe Central.
