Skip replacement guidelines

A public highway refers to public paths, roads and verges.

  • Every effort should be made place skips off the highway.
  • No skips shall be placed
    • Within 15 metres of a junction
    • Within traffic junction signal control loops
    • On school zig-zag markings
  • Skips may only be placed on single and double yellow lines with suitable road safety measures and prior permission from the principle maintenance officer.
  • Skips on classified roads will be identified using signage comparable with that in the Safety at street works and road works guidance.
  • Skips may be placed on paths when this does not reasonably obstruct or present a risk to users, and with prior agreement from the principle maintenance officer.
  • Skips shall not be placed on grass verges in urban areas. Permissions to do so will only be given in exceptional circumstances provided suitable protection is provided and with prior approval from the principle maintenance officer.
  • Skips cannot be placed half on and half off a carriageway / footway / verge.
  • Only ‘mini skips’ can be placed on Scunthorpe High Street.
  • The permit holder is responsible for the prevention of damage to the highway.
  • Any damage resulting from the placing of the skip is to be repaired by the permit holder.
  • The cost to make good any damage not repaired will be charged to the permit holder by the principle maintenance officer.
