People across North Lincolnshire have used the coronavirus pandemic as an opportunity to stop smoking. An estimated 800 residents across our area have quit the habit, many with the help of the Healthy Lifestyle Service.

There has never been a better time to stop. Research published last month found that smokers with Covid-19 were 14 times more likely to develop severe respiratory disease.

There is evidence that smoking worsens the effects of the coronavirus, with smokers at greater risk of being admitted to hospital and dying from the disease. This is in addition to the risks that smokers face from heart disease, cancers, lung disease and other serious illnesses.

Smokers have taken notice of these growing concerns, with more than 300,000 stopping smoking during the outbreak in the UK, including 800 in our area since March.

The North Lincolnshire Healthy Lifestyle Service can support any person living or working in North Lincolnshire to stop smoking. The free professional support uses nicotine replacement therapy or e-cigarettes.

The team may even be able to deliver nicotine replacement therapy to those most in need, or practicing self-isolation.

Support is also available at the NHS Smokefree website, the Today is the Day website or on Twitter
