The next multi-million-pound development on North Lincolnshire road’s network for the new southern junction on the M181 has begun.
Esh Construction, who were awarded the contract, arrived on site bright and early on Monday 1 July to kick start the first phase of planned works.
This includes the formation of temporary accesses from Burringham Road which will enable access to the work area for plant and equipment to be able to construct the works, with temporary traffic signals in place throughout this period of work.
Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council said: “This is a very exciting new development and will mean the bypass for Burringham will move a step closer in reducing congestion, cutting commuting times to and from Scunthorpe and unlock land for new homes.
“The impact of this new infrastructure will be felt by people living in Burringham, as well as drivers using Berkeley Circle and commuters coming from Ashby, Bottesford and Messingham.”
Over the next couple of weeks, the permanent site welfare and compound areas will be formed, and the temporary traffic signals will no longer be required. Excavation works and stoning up of the outer sections of the roundabout will then begin.
Michael Sherrard, Construction Manager at Esh Construction, said: “The M181 Southern Junction has been long in the making therefore we are pleased to have a spade in the ground on site.
“As we take steps to become a more sustainable contractor, we will reduce carbon emissions throughout the scheme by using recycled fill material which has been screened, crushed and processed within 10 miles of site, and welfare facilities will be powered by a solar generator. We will also re-invest locally by procuring a local supply chain.”
The full schedule of work is expected to be completed on the new junction by Spring 2025, with North Lincolnshire Council leading the project through National Highways.
