Work is progressing well on the new £4m St John’s Market in Scunthorpe with around 40 tons of British Steel sections from Scunthorpe being used throughout the refurbishment.
All three floors of the former BHS store in Scunthorpe town centre are being renovated to house the new St John’s Market that is planned to open in spring 2019.
British Steel sections that have been manufactured and rolled at the plant in Scunthorpe are helping to create 62 stall units.
Contractors started on site at the end of September and since then the strip out has been completed, drainage works are ongoing, internal walls are being built, steel frames are being erected and a new service yard is being installed.
St John’s Market forms part of ambitious plans to transform the Scunthorpe town centre with a business led £60m regeneration project.
The indoor market is creating new life, construction jobs and training opportunities in the town centre.
There will be a seamless transition with traders continuing to operate from the current site until the new indoor market opens.

Whilst work is ongoing at St John’s Market, Scunthorpe Market is still open selling a wide range of products.

“I am positive that St John’s Market will be a success in its prominent location in Scunthorpe town centre next to the bus station and multi-storey car park, which along with other car parks, offers free car parking. It is fantastic that nearly 90 per cent of stalls have been taken up already from both current traders on Scunthorpe Market and new traders. There is going to be a real mix of stalls that will ensure it is a vibrant and modern market.”
