A new inclusion support unit has opened at Baysgarth School in Barton upon Humber following a £300,000 investment from North Lincolnshire Council.
Called Headway, the project included a new two-classroom extension and a refurbishment of the previous Skills Centre on the site, to make the facility more practical and adapted to pupils’ needs.
With space for up to 30 pupils when it is at its full capacity, the centre includes an intervention room, an IT suite, a gym, a motor vehicle room and a beauty room, as well as the more traditional classroom spaces.
Barton MP, Martin Vickers, officially opened the school’s alternative provision on Friday 18 October 2019, with Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, Cllr Rob Waltham; and Barton ward members, Cllr Paul Vickers and Mayor of North Lincolnshire Cllr Jonathan Evison.
Richard Briggs, Headteacher at Baysgarth School, said:
“This facility shows the benefits of the strong partnership we have with the local authority that has already seen significant investment on our site to advantage this community.
“We are very proud that as a school Baysgarth is both committed to outstanding results for our students and an inclusive approach that ensures that every student that comes to us is valued and supported to be the best they can be.”
Cllr Paul Vickers, ward member for Barton upon Humber, said:
“Baysgarth is unrecognisable from the school it was some years ago, and not just because of the new building. Staff have worked hard to create a positive teaching environment and an inclusive family atmosphere, and the opening of Headway is the next step in that grand vision.
“The new Headway facility won’t just provide a new, more useable learning space for pupils at Baysgarth, it will act as a central point for students across the area to keep them engaged with mainstream education.”
Cllr Rob Waltham, Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said:
“Children and young people in North Lincolnshire are receiving the best standard of education our area has ever seen, with 9 out of 10 schools rated good or outstanding by Ofsted. It’s through investments like this, which provide a modern and enhanced learning environment, that we can continue to increase the standards of education in our schools.”
Building work started on the project in June 2018, and was carried out by Scunthorpe-based GS Kelsey Construction.
