There are only a few days left for you to nominate for North Lincolnshire Council’s sixth Community Champion Awards taking place on Thursday 23 November 2017 at The Baths Hall in Scunthorpe.

The deadline for nominations is Saturday 30 September. Hurry - nominate before it’s too late!

The awards recognise unsung heroes in North Lincolnshire. The newest award is Act of Bravery, sponsored by Humberside Fire and Rescue Service. Do you know anyone who deserves this award?

Nominate a group or individual of any age who has courage or displayed courage, resolution or daring in the face of danger or adversity.

Act of Bravery was added to the awards last year and the judges decided to make it a permanent award. Last year it was awarded to Carl Thompson, Diane Nunns and Steph Parkinson from Axholme Academy in Crowle. Here’s their story:

A fun day out could have ended in tragedy for student’s at Axholme Academy. After enjoying a school trip to Alton Towers, the coachload of children were travelling back to the Isle of Axholme when their driver suddenly fell ill at the wheel and lost consciousness.

On a busy motorway, the coach began to swerve across the carriageway, striking the central reservation as it did so. With frightened children to attend to, it would have been easy to panic. But English teacher Carl kept a cool head and manager to get into the driving seat with teaching assistant Steph pulling the driver out of the way – helped by Diane.

Carl was then able to steer the bus across the motorway and up a slip road, navigating a roundabout before finally finding the brakes.

It was stuff from an action movie – but reality for this coach party, who had true heroes on board. Luckily there were no injuries, and the driver made a full recovery.

You can nominate an individual or group who you think deserves any of the awards. Nominations can be made online or by contacting the community recreation team on 01724 297270 or emailing community.recreation@northlincs.gov.uk for a nomination form.

Cllr John Briggs, Deputy Mayor of North Lincolnshire, said:

“The Community Champion Awards is an opportunity for all those people in North Lincolnshire who have achieved great things, volunteered their time or carried out selfless acts, to be recognised.

“There are some truly inspiring people and stories right on our doorstep that shouldn’t go unmissed. Do you know anyone who deserves the Act of Bravery award? Please make sure that those who deserve it, are nominated for an award.

“Each year I look forward to the awards just as much as I did the first time we held them. No ceremony is the same and is something that really brings the community together.

“If you know an individual or group that deserves a Community Champion Award, make sure you nominate them. Whether it is a personal achievement, inspiration to others, the work they have done in their community or volunteering their services for a good cause, we want to hear from you. You have until 30 September to nominate.”
