Crime prevention event for Westcliff allotment holders

17 February 2017

A crime prevention event is being held at the Multi Agency Hub on Westcliff Precinct on Tuesday 21 February from 12pm to 3pm for local allotment holders on Bodmin Road.

North Lincolnshire Council’s Safer Neighbourhoods team, Humberside Police and Ongo are working with the allotment holders in a bid to prevent break-ins and theft of equipment.

At the event, free crime prevention advice and products will be given to the allotments holders.

CCTV cameras have been provided by Safer Neighbourhoods to cover the entrance of the allotments to deter and prevent crime.

Allotment holders are planning to form a group with a key coordinator representing them at the monthly Neighbourhood Action Team meetings.

Anyone interested in joining the allotment group or Neighbourhood Watch Group in Westcliff should pop into the hub on Westcliff Precinct for more details.

Cllr Richard Hannigan, cabinet member for Governance and Transformation, said:

“Although incidents are rare at the allotments on Bodmin Road, we are conscious that with spring not too far away people will be working on their allotments more and we want to ensure incidents are prevented.

“We have been working closely with the allotment holders to ensure they are vigilant and don't provide opportunities for thieves. This coordinated approach will allow allotment holders to enjoy their time at their allotment and have a point of contact if they do come across any issues.”

Inspector Tim Harvey, Humberside Police, said:

“Humberside Police is delighted to support the Safer Neighbourhood’s initiative on Bodmin Allotments.

“A lot of attention is understandably focussed on home security and preventing burglary but allotments can also sometimes be affected by crime. Some basic crime prevention advice can make a big difference and ensure that the allotment holders can enjoy and take pride in what their hard work produces without the worry of becoming a victim of crime.”
