Work started today, Friday 4 November on the new £5.5m Axholme North Sports Centre in Crowle. Andrew Percy MP dug the first piece of land, accompanied by Cllr John Briggs and Cllr Julie Reed.
The new sports centre is being built next to the Axholme Academy and will comprise:
A MUGA (Multi Use Games Area) for football, hockey and other sports
Tennis and netball courts
A four-lane 25m swimming pool
Spectator area and changing rooms
Changing places toilet
The centre is expected to be ready to use in winter 2017.
The school sports hall will also receive a make-over to compliment the new sports centre.
Cllr John Briggs, cabinet member for Commercial Enterprise at North Lincolnshire, said:
“This is a major investment for residents of all ages and is for everyone in all the villages across Axholme North.
“Exercise provides many benefits – it helps improve concentration, stimulates the mind, and strengthens/tones the body.”
Cllr Julie Reed, cabinet member for Adults and Families at North Lincolnshire Council, said:
“The Centre will deliver an excellent range of sport and leisure activities, helping residents keep fit and healthy. It is also about families, friends, neighbours and the young and not so young having fun.
“This is another example of how the council is investing in the wellbeing of the communities across Axholme North.”
Joe Sellars, Head Teacher at The Axholme Academy, said:
“We at Academy have worked alongside local councillors for many years to get good sports and leisure facilities for the North of the Isle. We are delighted that this is finally coming to fruition in what will be a truly community facility benefiting students and people of all ages.”
