Plans well underway for new boxing club in Crowle

Plans to open up a boxing club for young people are well underway. North Lincolnshire Council has been in talks with local boxing coach Mark Lappin with a view to him opening up a club in the town.

North Lincolnshire Council has acquired the former Market Hall in the Market Place, which is currently being renovated. Once completed, it will become a Community Hub for the whole community to use and may incorporate the youth centre, a community cinema, heritage displays, and other council and community led initiatives.

The plan is for Mark to initially use the Youth Club on Church Street to open up a boxing club for young people. It will be a not-for-profit voluntary sports club. Mark is a qualified level two boxing coach and has previously coached at a boxing club in Scunthorpe.

While work continues on getting the former Market Hall ready, Mark will use Crowle Youth Centre on Monday/Tuesday evening – when it is vacant. The council is also in discussions with Mark about using the premises at the weekend.

Cllr John Briggs, deputy leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said:

“It would be great to have a boxing club in the town and we are committed to ensuring this happens. There’s a lot of interest locally and Mark is really keen to get the club up and running, and so are we. A lot of investment is currently underway in Crowle and this will be yet another benefit to the local community. But first, we need to ensure that the necessary systems and procedures are in place to enable Mark to run a boxing club and we are helping him with this. I am confident that this venture will become a reality and soon.”

Mark Lappin, boxing coach, said:

“The amount of interest has been amazing – from all age groups. We are looking to open the boxing club in the next three to four weeks Monday and Tuesday 5.30pm to 6.30pm (Crowle Cubs class under 11s), and 6.30pm to 7.30pm for over 11s and adults. We are working towards being affiliated as a British Amateur Boxing Association (ABA) boxing club and hoping to have the building full time from the summer. In addition, I will be looking at running a ladies boxfit class on Saturdays and a boot camp on Sunday morning. Look on the Crowle Boxing Club Facebook page for more details.”
