Deputy Leader - Adults' Services and Economic Development Cabinet Member - Minutes - 17 June 2005

The following item contains exempt information as defined in paragraphs 8 and 9 of Part 1 of Schedule 12A of the Local Government Act 1972

14 (2) CROWLE MOORS - The Head of Planning and Regeneration submitted an urgent report seeking approval for the purchase of approximately 63 acres of land on Crowle Moors.

The council had been trying to secure the cessation of peat working on Crowle Moors for a number of years.

An enforcement notice relating to the peat working was served on 12 March 2003 and was now the subject of a public inquiry. The inquiry was opened in 2004 but was adjourned by the inspector for further work to be undertaken. The inquiry resumed on 5 July 2005.

Purchase of the site would guarantee that no more peat would be extracted from the site which would then be restored for nature conservation purposes.

English Nature was fully in support of this proposal and was prepared to partly grant aid the purchase and restoration of the site. Various other environmental groups also supported the purchase.

Further details were set out in the report.

Resolved – That approval be given for the purchase of approximately 63 acres of land on Crowle Moors subject to the receipt of partial grant funding from English Nature.

Note: Reports are in Portable Document Format (PDF) and therefore require a suitable reader to view them. A reader can be downloaded free from the Adobe website (full instructions for downloading the reader are provided on the site).

Where there is no report this is because it is exempt, as it contains information which is considered to be of a confidential nature, as detailed in the Local Government (Access to Information) Act.
