The Northern Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage project will be launched on Wednesday 9 May 2012.
The project celebrates the heritage of eight former airfields across Northern Lincolnshire, particularly their contribution to the war effort during WW2 when Lincolnshire became famous as a Bomber County:
North Lincolnshire Council is keen to hear from anyone who worked at or remembers the airfields and would be willing to record an oral history. This is an easy and informal way to share your memories. For more information call 01724 297536.
As part of the project, heritage boards have been installed at each of the sites, detailing the airfield’s history. A leaflet with information about the trails can be picked up from Brigg Tourist Information Centre and other attractions around the area after the launch.
The project links up with the already successful heritage trails running further south in Lincolnshire with Aviation Heritage Lincolnshire (AHL).
As part of Museums at Night initiative, visitors can find out more about Elsham, Hibaldstow and Kirton in Lindsey. Elsham Wolds Memorial Rooms will be open to visitors on Friday 18 May between 6pm and 8.30pm and a special event will take place at Kirton in Lindsey Town Hall on Saturday 19 May between 6pm and 10pm to commemorate the airfields at Kirton and Hibaldstow, including a 1940s fashion show.
Schools and youth groups are invited to take part in the project through AHL’s time capsule competition. The competition is open now and runs until 1 October 2012. For more information about the Time Capsule competition please visit the Visit Lincolnshire website.
