Cultural Olympiad

During summer 2012 a very special event will take place. As the Olympic torch passes along the country in preparation for the games, North Lincolnshire’s towns and villages will celebrate with a range of activities. The Cultural Olympiad aims to create stronger links between sports, culture and the arts, reflecting the spirit of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Cultural Olympiad activities in North Lincolnshire will be themed around cycling because of the area’s strong history of cycle manufacture. The area’s only Olympic medallist, Lal White was also a cyclist.

The activities will be held across different venues and facilities across North Lincolnshire including Normanby Hall Country Park, 20-21 Visual Arts Centre and many more.

About Lal White

Albert ‘Lal’ White was many times English grass track cycle racing champion and more famously won the silver medal at the 1920 Antwerp Olympics. He also rode in the 1924 Paris Olympics. He worked at Lysaghts Steelworks by day and cycled in his free time. He was given light work and not much of it so that he could train for cycling.
