North Lincolnshire Council is committed to providing a website
that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of
technology or ability.
We are actively working to increase the accessibility and
usability of our website and in doing so adhere to many of the
available standards and guidelines, such as the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. These guidelines explain how to make web content
more accessible for people with disabilities. However conformance
with these guidelines will help make the web more user friendly for
all people.
We are continually working to improve the accessibility of
our site. We require new pages to meet a set of accessibility
requirements which include:
- Providing aids to navigation for screen reader users such as:
- an invisible link which allows the users to skip navigation
links in order to get quickly to the main content of the page
- proper markup for identifying the page title (i.e. an
<h1> element)
- Providing text equivalents for images
- Providing null text equivalents on decorative images
- Identifying row and column headers for data tables
- Programmatically associating labels with form fields
- Using valid HTML 4.01 Transitional markup language
- Supporting browser settings for enlarging text and user style
sheets
- Using consistent navigation and presentation style
throughout the site
- Enable keyboard navigation of web pages
- Although JavaScript is used on our website, essential
functionality on most pages does not require it
When necessary accessibility testing using automated tools and
manual procedures is performed on any new content.
Wherever possible we use plain English on the website. Plain
English is language that everyone in our audience can easily
understand. The only exceptions to this are documents that convey
text of a technical or legal nature.
Whilst North Lincolnshire Council strive to adhere to the
accepted guidelines and standards for accessibility and usability,
it acknowledges that it is not always possible to do so in all
areas of the website.
We are continually seeking out solutions that will bring all
areas of the site up to the same level of overall web
accessibility. In the meantime should you experience any difficulty
in accessing the North Lincolnshire Council website, please
don't hesitate to contact us using our online feedback form or by email at customerservice@northlincs.gov.uk.
