Healthy eating

Trying to eat more healthily can seem daunting. In fact, by changing just a few eating habits you make a big difference to your diet and it can help you to look and feel your best. Making that change will mean you'll get more of the nutrients your body needs.

A healthy balanced diet contains a variety of foods including:

  • Plenty of fruit and vegetables
  • Plenty of starchy foods such as wholegrain bread, pasta and rice
  • Some protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, eggs and lentils
  • Some dairy foods
  • It should also be low in fat (especially saturated fat), salt and sugar.

The key to a healthy balanced diet is not to ban or omit any foods or food groups but to balance what you eat by consuming a variety of foods from each food group in the right proportions for good health.

It's important to understand the effect that food has on your body and to learn how to eat the right balance of healthy and not-so-healthy foods. It's also important that you're able to enjoy what you're eating, knowing that you're giving your body everything it needs.
