The South Humber Bank Wildlife and People Project

The Heritage Lottery Fund is funding the South Humber Bank Wildlife and People Project (SHWAP). North Lincolnshire Council, the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust and the Environment Agency have all taken part.

The project is drawing to a close at the end of 2010, but it has acheived a lot over the last five years.

Archaeology and heritage

SHWAP volunteers took part in fieldwalking across the five parishes of Alkborough, Whitton, Winteringham, South Ferriby and Barton. Between them, they picked up nearly 20,000 finds in the 18 fields that were investigated. many of these fields had no previously reported finds, so this was very valuable research. 48 new records have been added to the North Lincolnshire Historic Environment Record.

We also commissioned geophysical surveys of a Roman 'ladder' settlement at Walcot, and a Roman settlement west of Barton. An excavation at Countess Close in Alkborough was successful in dating the monument for the first time (late 12th century AD). The southern earthwork bank at Countess Close was also restored to how it looked in the medieval period.

Volunteers also helped to survey the remains of our industrial heritage at the old cement works between South Ferriby and Barton

The heritage trail

We have helped to develop a heritage trail along the South Humber Bank. It will link archaeological and historic sites from Alkborough east to Barton upon Humber and beyond. On-site information boards and leaflets will explain and interpret the remains. The heritage trail will be launched officially on 10 December 2010.

On Saturday 11 December there will be a drop-in event to celebrate the launch of the new heritage trail. Finds from the SHWAP community fieldwalking will be on display between 10am and 4pm at Far Ings National Nature Reserve, Far Ings Lane, Barton upon Humber.
