This brief introduction will allow the learner to explore and experiment with a variety of watercolour techniques–colour glazing, wet on wet, pen and wash, the course aims to develop the learner’s creativity and understanding how to use watercolour paints. You will explore drawing techniques using various pencils developing use of line and shade. As part of the course, you will also explore chalk pastel painting, looking at colour mixing, blending and mark making.

Course aim

With support and guidance from the tutor, learners will familiarise themselves with resources, tools and equipment required for future creativity. Learners with existing knowledge can develop further their skills. The aim is to introduce the learner to different watercolour techniques and explore experimental approaches to drawing and the use of chalk pastels.

Methods of assessment

Photographs of work and an Individual learning plan will be used to record learner progress and achievement. The course tutor will provide guidance and feedback relating to progress and achievement.

Content and learning outcomes

  • explore the characteristics of watercolour paints/chalk pastels/pencils

  • explore tools and equipment for painting

  • eplore and develop basic drawing and painting techniques

  • identify suitable materials and techniques to take forward for further development
  • maintain a safe working environment

Requirements for the session

Please bring with you any materials that you may already own such as pencils, watercolour paper, brushes and paints. Some materials will be available for learners to use at the session.
