This course will be half price for people aged over 60 and not in receipt of pension guarantee credit. It will only cost £5 for people in receipt of benefits. Please enquire if you think you might be eligible for fee remission.

Subject details

  • to create a garment of your own choice

  • to learn sewing skills that enable learners to produce a new garment or revamp an older garment and bring it up to date 

Course aim 

During the course the learner will be shown how to: 

  • cut pattern pieces both paper and fabric
  • tailor tacks and baste tacking
  • garment construction techniques
  • finishing techniques such as seams and hems
  • alteration to existing garments by either size or design 

Content and Learning Outcomes 

  • explore fabrics, weight and versatility
  • explore construction and finishing techniques suitable for each project
  • colour and fabric coordination
  • maintain a safe working environment 

Methods of assessment 

The course tutor will help each learner to develop an Individual learning plan so that they are aware of their personal progress on the course. The course tutor will work one to one with each learner and provide demonstration, guidance and feedback relating to progress and achievement. Photographs of work will be used to record individual progress and end achievements. 

Requirements for first session 

You will require a pattern and some fabric, a small sewing kit such as pins, needles, tape measure, cottons etc. 

Additional costs 

Own fabrics or cottons, zips etc.
