If you want to vote in local, national and European elections
your name must be on the register of electors. To find out if
you're already registered call the council on 01724 296245.
If you are not already on the register of electors and want to
be included you should complete the registration form (ER3).
Why should I register?
You can only vote in elections if your name is on the register
of electors. Credit reference agencies also use the register to
verify details of people trying to get credit or open bank
accounts.
Who can register?
To register you must be a British or Commonwealth citizen, or a
citizen of the Republic of Ireland. If you are a citizen of a
European Union country other than Britain or Ireland, you can only
register to vote in council and European Parliamentary elections.
If you are a citizen of any other country you cannot register to
vote. For more details download the eligible nationalities
information sheet:
Young people who are nearly 18 years old can register, but
cannot vote until they are 18.
If you are in the armed forces you can
register as a service voter.
If you live abroad for more than six months you
must
register as an overseas voter.
Residents of mental hospitals, homeless people and remand
prisoners can register on a special form. You can get the form from
the council on 01724 296245. Convicted prisoners aren't
eligible to vote.
How do I register?
If you are not already on the register of electors and want to
be included you should complete the registration form
(ER3) above. This will allow us to add you and any other
adults living in your home to the register. Each person applying to
be on the register must sign the form.
What if I've moved or changed my name?
If you've moved house or changed your surname, either by
marriage or deed poll, since 15 October last year you need to
complete the registration form (ER3).
What if I can't vote in person?
You can apply for a
postal vote for any election. You can also apply for someone
else to vote for you (
proxy vote) in certain circumstances. For example, if you are
blind or disabled, or if you will be away from home during an
election.
