Housing Cabinet Member - Minutes - 5 December 2002

118 (43) DAY SHELTER PROVISION – The Director of Social and Housing Services submitted an urgent report considering the proposed provision of a Christmas day shelter for those suffering from many forms of social exclusion.

The Forge and the council in partnership had provided this project for the last two years

This project had been provided through a partnership between the council and the Forge for the last two years and was proposed again this year.

The project had previously aimed to provide:

  • a drop-in service providing hot meals and drinks;
  • sign-posting assistance to those with welfare rights and housing problems;
  • emergency food hamper relief service for the Social Services child care teams;
  • a service to the elderly including a luncheon and taking meals to those in the community that are housebound.

The project would operate over the Christmas period up to the 3 January 2003 and it was anticipated that approximately 500 residents would take part in activities, receive a meal, company or advice.

To provide this service the Forge required funding to the value of £1,500 to cover the cost of food and equipment.

Resolved – That funding from the General Fund to the value of £1,500 be made available to the Forge to support this project.
