It is more than 170 years since the national system for registering births and deaths was introduced. Civil marriage came in at the same time.
The registration service creates over 1.5m records of births, marriages and deaths every year. This normally involves parents, relatives or couples wishing to marry visiting their local register office at least once. These records of births, marriages and deaths are kept in paper registers at local register offices.
North Lincolnshire Register Office is based in Scunthorpe. This website provides information on the services provided by the register office.
More information about registering births, deaths and marriages can be found on the General Register Office web site.
