What does North Lincolnshire Youth Offending Service (YOS) do?
North Lincolnshire YOS works to reduce youth offending, protect the public from youth crime, and prevent re-offending. The YOS team does this by helping young people to make better choices and decisions about their lives and involve them in positive activities that keep them safe and increase opportunities for better life chances.
The service works with children and young people aged 10 to 18 years who come to the attention of the police and courts because of their involvement in crime. It also provides an early intervention service aimed at preventing young people getting caught up in youth crime and reducing the likelihood of them ever becoming involved in the criminal justice system.
The Youth Offending Team provides a range of services that include helping to support young people and their families to try to stop them from becoming further involved in crime and anti-social behaviour. We also work with victims, reducing the impact of crime and helping to make reparation for harm done.
Who works in the Youth Justice Team?
North Lincolnshire YOS team includes workers from partner agencies such Children’s Services, Substance Misuse Services, Health, Police and Probation. The team also has access to other qualified health workers who can offer advice and support around physical, emotional and mental health issues and give advice on how to keep safe and reduce drug use.
What happens when someone is referred to Youth Offending Service?
Each young person who comes to the attention of the service will be assessed to decide their own vulnerabilities, the risk of them re-offending and the risk of them harming others. The assessment helps to plan work with the young person, and their family, to reduce risks and promote the young person’s development and well-being. We also make sure that if young people are vulnerable, we work with the right people to make them safe.
How does the service work?
We aim to:
-
Give a fast response to young people who have offended or are at risk of offending and provide the help and support needed to prevent the situation getting worse, stop their offending and keep them safe
-
Encourage young people to make amends to their victims and the community
-
Develop activities that increase opportunities for young people that will help them stop committing crime and avoid more serious offending whilst improving their options and life chances
-
Help young people and their families take responsibility for what has happened
-
Help our young people get back into education, training or employment so that they can avoid further trouble and achieve their potential as young people and adults without crime
-
Avoid young people going to custody when they can be safely managed in the community
