Full council tax is normally charged where two or more adults live in a property. Council tax charges may be reduced in a number of ways depending on the household circumstances.
Single resident discount
If you are the only adult living in your home, a 25 per cent discount may be given. This is called a 'Single Resident Discount'.
Disregard discounts
Some other people will get discounts because they, or the people who live with them, are not counted when adding up the number of adults living in a property. You may not be counted for council tax if you come into one of these categories.
Unoccupied home discount
If a property is furnished and no-one's main home then there will be a discount of 10 per cent. However, a 50 per cent discount will still apply in certain cases. For further details please use our online council tax enquiries form.
Council Tax and exempt properties
If a property is unoccupied and unfurnished for more than six months no discount will apply and a full charge is payable. More information on empty properties can be found under Council Tax and exempt properties.
Reduction for disabled facilities
You may qualify for a reduction if someone disabled lives in your home and it has special facilities to meet the needs of a disabled person.
Council tax benefit
This is available to households who are on a low income to assist with the payment of council tax. More information is available on the council tax benefit page.
Second Adult Rebate
If you do not live with a partner and have other adults living with you who are on a low income, you may be able to claim second adult rebate to assist with the payment of council tax.
We use partner to mean - a person you are married to or a person you live with as if you are married to them or a civil partner or a person you live with as if you are civil partners.
