In May 2009, North Lincolnshire was chosen to start one of biggest sporting events ever to take place in the area.
For the first time in the area's history, North Lincolnshire officially launched The Tour of Britain 2009 cycle race on Saturday 12 September.
The Tour of Britain is a cycle race, made up of eight stages, where top athletes from the cycling world race from place to place across parts of Great Britain. It culminates in a final stage in the heart of London.
The first stage of The Tour of Britain started from Scunthorpe and finished in York. Almost 100 top athletes from the cycling world began the first stage of the 107-mile race from North Lincolnshire Council's Pittwood House and the surrounding picturesque Central Park.
