Sustainable travel

The council works to promote initiatives that can reduce congestion, improve local environments and encourage healthier and safer lifestyles. Many of these initiatives are part of the broader cross-government agenda for creating safer greener communities.

  • Cycling
Find out about the strategies for promoting cycling as an alternative form of transport for local journeys.
  • Travel plans
A travel plan is a package of measures produced by employers to encourage staff to use alternatives to single-occupancy car-use.
  • Motorcycling
Increasing numbers of people are turning to motorcycles and scooter in order to beat congestion. The council recognises motorcycling as a "mainstream" mode of transport, a affordable alternative to the car, provides independance and mobility and environmental benefits.
  • School travel
Promoting safe and healthy journeys to school which in turn, can also help to reduce the use of the car and impact of the 'school run'.
  • Car sharing
Car sharing is when two or more people share a car and travel together. Car sharing is a simple way to cut the costs of fuel and parking, cut congestion and pollution, and cut the stress of driving.
  • Walking
    - Promoting walking as a healthy and more preferable option to the motor car for short journeys.
  • Public transport
Get bus timetables and local information to help you with your journey.
