Placement of traffic lights
Traffic lights may be installed:
- Because of possible traffic hazards.
- To manage traffic flow from new developments and other facilities such as schools and leisure centres. (In some cases developers will finance new signals).
If you wish to report a fault or damage to traffic lights, please use the contact details to the right of this page.
Temporary traffic lights
Temporary traffic lights are traffic lights that are in position temporarily. They normally control traffic while road works are being carried out by the council, statutory undertakers (such as gas, water, electric) or private contractors.
If for any reason the temporary traffic lights are not working or you are experiencing long delays at the road works, please look for the courtesy board provided. This will have the name and telephone number of the company carrying out the works. They should respond by sending an operative out to correct the problem.
We have a set procedure for people/companies who wish to use temporary traffic lights on the road. Our guidance notes and an application form are available to download. Alternatively, you can contact us using the contact details to the right of this page.

A traffic officer can arrange a site meeting to discuss the proposed location of works. They can also discuss the preferred start and end dates for the works to take place.
