Senior representatives from the member organisations of the North Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership signed up to the partnership at its official launch on 14 February 2002 at Pittwood House, Scunthorpe.
In autumn 2001, The North Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership was established to:
- Significantly reduce the numbers of people killed and seriously injured on roads in North Lincolnshire
- Raise public awareness of road safety issues
- Encourage safer driving behaviour through a combination of education, training, publicity and enforcement
- Ensure the effective utilisation of resources and a co-ordinated approach to road safety in North Lincolnshire.
The partnership brings together all organisations with an interest in road safety to work together to reduce the number of incidents on the area's roads.
These include:
- North Lincolnshire Council
- Humberside Police
- Humberside Fire & Rescue Service
- East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust
- The Highways Agency
- The Scunthorpe Telegraph
Every year on Britain's roads around 3,200 people are killed. That's:
- Almost 1,000 more than the number of people killed in the World Trade Centre terrorist attack
- The number of passengers that would nearly fill eight jumbo jets
- Over 40 times the combined rail deaths at Paddington, Clapham, Southall, Hatfield and Great Heck
- Nine people every day
Every year on Britain's roads an additional 288,000 people are injured. That's:
- The number of people that would fill Old Trafford football stadium nearly four times over
- Almost double the entire population of North Lincolnshire.
We all know someone who has been killed or injured on Britain's roads.
Why are there so many 'accidents' on Britain's roads?
Poor driving causes almost all the incidents on our roads. Too many drivers have little or no respect for the road, the driving conditions or other road users. They are complacent and think that it can't happen to them.
But it can - and it does!
Can you honestly say that you are never guilty of any of the following?
- Drink driving
- Speeding
- Using a mobile phone when driving.
- Dangerous overtaking
- Tailgating
- Inappropriate or illegal parking - particularly around schools
- Driving for too long when you are tired or have had little or no sleep
- Not wearing seat belts.
North Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership's aims
With you, we want to make our roads safer for everyone by:
- Promoting safe road use and respect for other users
- Working with young people to develop skills, understanding and safe attitudes to the road
- Providing advice and information on all aspects of road safety
- Working with local drivers to raise awareness of what causes accidents and encourage respect for all road users
- Looking at ways to improve the roads in North Lincolnshire through engineering safety schemes to reduce casualties
- Tackling poor driving through enforcement to reduce the risk of casualties.
