Rural transport schemes

The Humber and Wolds Rural Community Council operates a voluntary car service.

The aim of the service is to provide a safe, reliable and affordable voluntary transport service to residents of rural North Lincolnshire with genuine transport difficulties.

We have approximately 90 volunteers across North Lincolnshire who use their own cars to provide transport for people for things like health related appointments, shopping or social outings, local or long distance.

Transport can also be arranged for hospital appointments at Castle Hill, Hull Royal Infirmary and other hospitals in Hull.

  • The customer pays the driver a mileage rate (currently 37p per mile) from the driver’s residence and return.
  • Where possible we try to get a driver as close as possible to the passenger’s home.
  • Drivers will wait for a passenger for up to one and a half hours for the return journey.
  • If waiting time is longer, then depending on the availability of the driver, the passenger is required to pay for two separate return journeys.
  • A minimum of 24 hours' notice is required to arrange a journey.

The booking line is open Monday to Friday between 9am and 12pm. The telephone number is 01652 636292.

Wheelchair accessible mini-buses

There are two wheelchair accessible minibuses and a MPV (multi passenger vehicle) based in Barton, and a minibus in the Isle of Axholme. These vehicles are available for groups of individuals and again a mileage rate is charged to cover fuel costs.

The drivers are all volunteers who have been trained to MIDAS (minibus driver awareness scheme) standard.

Contact the booking office for further information on costs. The telephone number is 01652 661226.

Arrangements can also be made for the use of additional vehicles to be available, if needed, through Transport Solutions.

For further information telephone 01652 661226.

Volunteers

The service is always looking for more volunteer drivers to use either their own vehicles or the services multi-passenger vehicle or mini-buses.

Typical journeys include:

  • Visits to the hospital or doctors
  • Shopping
  • Social events
  • One off trips
  • Regular weekly or monthly trips

If you could only spare an hour a month it would make a difference to someone’s life.

Volunteers interested in driving our mini-buses will receive full certificated training.

More information

For more information about volunteering contact Margaret Credland at the Voluntary Car Service, Haven House, Waterside Road, Barton on 01652 661226.

Wheels 4 U

The aim of the service is to provide travel information for people who have difficulty in accessing training, education and employment.

If no public transport solution is available then arrangements can be made for individuals to hire 50cc Scooters for a limited period of up to 26 weeks for employment purposes, and up to 40 weeks for education purposes.
