Free travel for people with disabilities

Free travel passes are available for people who are blind, deaf, limbless, have severe learning disabilities or are unable to walk. This covers:

  • free bus travel within North Lincolnshire and as far as Grimsby, Lincoln, Gainsborough, Doncaster, Goole and Hull
  • free fares on local rail services as far as Grimsby, Doncaster, Goole, Lincoln and Gainsborough Central (the last two via Barnetby only).

Do you qualify for free travel?

Yes, if you are registered with the council's social services or NCH Kaleidoscope as:

  • blind
  • deaf (with or without speech)
  • limbless
  • having a severe learning disability or are;
  • unable to walk because of disability or injury (this excludes short term mobility problems).

If any of the above apply to you, and if you are over 18 years you’ll need to fill in an application form. You can get one from your local social services team or by contacting the council's public transport team on 01724 297460. Social services will check you are eligible and stamp the form.

If you are under 18 call NCH Kaleidoscope on 01724 277766 and ask for an application form. Or call in at Dunstall Street, Scunthorpe, DN15 6JZ, email nek@mail.nch.org.uk.

Applications from limbless people will be accepted if they are endorsed by social services or the Artificial Limb Unit, East Yorkshire NHS Trust, Sykes Street, Hull, HU2 8BB, tel 01482 325656. This unit caters for limbless people in North Lincolnshire.

If you are unable to walk, please ask the council’s public transport staff or the council's Shopmobility office (tel: 01724 297418 ) for an application form.

The form needs to be signed to confirm that you are unable to walk due to a disability which has a substantial and long term effect on your mobility. This can be done by:

  • the disabled person’s doctor or
  • the local Social and Housing Services team or
  • the council’s Shopmobility service or
  • in the case of a person aged under 18, NCH Kaleidoscope

Please note that a doctor may charge for any examination or certificate.

A pass will not be issued unless one of these agencies has confirmed that you are eligible.

Please send you completed application form to Scunthorpe Shopmobility, Fenton Street, Scunthorpe, DN15 6QX, enclosing a passport size photograph of yourself with your name on the back. You can also take the completed form to Shopmobility and staff there will take your photograph and issue the pass.

Where to use your travel pass

Buses

  • Your pass is valid for free travel on all local buses in North Lincolnshire.
  • You may also travel free on through bus routes as far as Hull, Grimsby and Cleethorpes, Lincoln, Gainsborough, Doncaster and Goole. But please remember, one end of your journey must be in North Lincolnshire.

Trains

  • Your pass is valid for free travel on trains between any two stations in North Lincolnshire. These are:

    Althorpe, Barnetby, Barrow Haven, Barton upon Humber, Brigg, Crowle, Goxhill, Kirton Lindsey, New Holland, Scunthorpe, Thornton Curtis and Ulceby.
  • Your pass is also valid for free travel between any of these North Lincolnshire stations and:

    Habrough, Stallingborough, Healing, Great Coates, Grimsby Town, Grimsby Docks, New Clee, Cleethorpes, Thorne South, Stainforth and Hatfield, Kirksandall, Doncaster, Gainsborough Central, Market Rasen and Lincoln.

Please remember one end of your journey must be in North Lincolnshire.

  • Rail travel to Market Rasen, Gainsborough Central and Lincoln is only available via Barnetby.

Conditions of use for all passes

  • Passes are only available to people who usually live in North Lincolnshire
  • The pass is not transferable and may only be used by the person to whom it was issued
  • Possession of a pass does not grant any person the right to a place on any particular train or bus or the right to a seat on a vehicle
  • All passengers travelling free or at reduced fares are subject to the conditions of the bus or train operators. The passholder may be required to show his or her pass at any time on a journey
  • North Lincolnshire Council accepts no liability for any loss, injury or inconvenience arising as a result of using a travel pass
  • North Lincolnshire Council reserves the right to amend the terms of the Travel Concession Scheme and to withdraw, amend or replace any pass

When travelling please remember…

  • Show your pass when you get on the bus - if you don’t have a pass you must pay the full fare
  • Get a ticket and keep it for the rest of your journey
  • Tell the driver where you are going
