Here are some of the frequently asked questions about gritting:
Where to grit?
Gritting priority is given to three types of roads/routes. It is based upon the recommendations in the National Code of Practice.
Precautionary salting routes
Principal roads, important main roads, main bus routes, routes around Scunthorpe General Hospital.
Secondary salting routes
Steep hills, significant lengths of road next to deep ditch, river or the like. Other bus routes. Pedestrianised areas of Scunthorpe and Brigg.
Snow clearance
In prolonged periods of lying snow/ice, estate and minor access roads in hilly or exposed locations may be treated. This is subject to the availability of resources. Snow clearance locations would only be considered when conditions dictate, and when all other priorities had been fully and adequately treated and resources become available.
When to grit?
MeteoGroup - provides a specialised winter weather forecasting service. The council receives a daily forecast. The forecast gives predictions about road surface temperatures and condition.
Do you provide grit bins?
Yes we do, but we cannot provide them everywhere. They are placed out at sites which meet the assessment criteria. Bins are placed before the winter period, and collected afterwards. They are restocked as and when required.
Before starting to complete the attached form or online application form you are strongly advised to read the Salt bins/heap policy.
If you would like to apply for a salt bin please use the attached form. Please return this to the address stated on the form.

Alternatively if you wish to apply online please use our online salt bins/heap application form.
Can a grit bin be removed?
Often grit bins become the focus of vandalism or the meeting place for young people. If this becomes a nuisance, you can request that the bin is removed. Other residents in the area must agree before the facility is withdrawn.
Are pedestrian routes gritted?
In very severe weather conditions, especially when snow or ice remains for some days, consideration is given to the treatment of pedestrian routes including footways and pavements. This is done in the following order :-
- Scunthorpe and Brigg pedestrian precincts.
- town centre streets/main pedestrian routes
- busy pedestrian routes and other shopping areas
- routes around Scunthorpe General Hospital
- other routes as resources allow
