HGV management and signage

The ability to move freight efficiently to and from the ports and industrial areas is crucial to the economic health, physical health and attractiveness of North Lincolnshire.

Freight routes

In order to reduce the number of Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) using unsuitable residential roads, a number of designated freight routes have been established in North Lincolnshire. Maps of these routes will shortly be avaliable on this website.

Unsuitable routes

Road sign

Many roads within North Lincolnshire are unsuitable for use by HGVs. This may be because of weight restrictions, height restrictions or width restrictions. Maps of these routes will shortly be avaliable on this website.

Any load being moved on public roads that weighs over 40 tonnes is classed as an abnormal load. Before a haulier can move an abnormal load he must notify and get consent from the police.

HGV signing

Road sign

Roads determined as unsuitable for HGVs are signed with restrictions. These require the legal backing of a TRO (Traffic Regulation Order). TROs take around nine months to complete. The council will seek to introduce restrictions on roads that are considered unsuitable.
