Occupational Therapy and Sensory Impairment Service

Social and Housing Services tries to help people with a disability stay in their own homes and have as good a quality of life as is possible. To achieve this the following services are provided through the Disability Team, which includes the Occupational Therapy and Sensory Impairment Service.

The Occupational Therapy and Sensory Impairment Service

What do they do?

The Occupational Therapy and Sensory Impairment service is now part of the new Disability Team. They are specially trained staff who can support individuals and carers by providing specialist assessments and practical support. This service aims to maintain people in their homes and help them remain as self-reliant as possible.

What can they do for me?

If you have a disability they can offer an assessment to identify techniques, equipment or adaptations which promote your independence within your homes.

There may be a small charge for providing some equipment and adaptations for your home. The team can advise you about this.

They assist with making recommendations for major alterations to your home and planning for them.

They provide programs of rehabilitation and mobility for visually impaired people, i.e. those registered by an opthamologist as partially sighted or blind.

They offer advice and information about disabilities and services to anyone that needs it.

Who can they help?

Anyone who is permanently and substantially disabled and who is normally resident in North Lincolnshire.

How long will I wait for help?

All referrals are prioritised so that the team visit those with the most urgent needs first, usually within two weeks. Every effort is made to make sure that all referrals are visited as soon as possible and within twelve weeks.

What will I have to pay?

There is a charge for the use of some equipment. The amount depends on the value of the equipment that you need. If you require a number of items of equipment then the maximum any one person is asked to pay is £50. You do not buy the equipment, you lease it for the period that you need it and then it comes back to the team when you have finished with it.

You can buy your own equipment direct from the suppliers and the team are happy to provide you with advice and help to do so.

If you think that the level of your contribution to the cost is not affordable you can appeal against it. The team will tell you how to go about this. There is also the Complaints Procedure if you feel that you have been treated unfairly.
