The best way to find out if it’s a good home is to go and have a look round and talk to the people who live there. You can get a list of homes from us or you can find them in the Yellow Pages (under Residential & Retirement and Nursing Homes). You are welcome to arrange to visit them. A good home won't mind if you just turn up but it would be helpful if you avoid mealtimes which can be busy. The sort of things you should look for are:
- is it a homely, friendly place?
- does it smell nice?
- do the people like living there?
We have a checklist that you can take with you when you visit the homes. It outlines the sort of things you should be looking for and the questions that you might ask.
North Lincolnshire Council runs a quality assurance scheme with our local care homes. It is called the Quality Development Scheme and those care homes who meet our standards are awarded the QDS Gold award. This is over and above the requirements of the Commission for Social Care Inspection that all care homes have to meet. Details of all local care homes, including the QDS Gold awards, can be found on our Care Homes in North Lincolnshire pages.
All homes are inspected every year to make sure that they provide the care that people need. Copies of the inspection reports are available to download from the Commission for Social Care Inspection website.
You can also buy copies of these inspection reports from the Commission for Social Care Inspection.
When you visit a home ask to see their annual inspection report.
