What are they?
The Government has set a national target that by 2010 there should be a children’s centre in every community providing services to families. The services delivered by the centre should reflect the needs of that individual community.
Who is it for?
Children’s centres offer a range of services for children up to five years and their families. These services could include:
- childcare and free nursery education
- family support and home visiting
- child and family health services
- job centre plus and parental training
- childminding networks
- support for children with disabilities
- advice and guidance on finding childcare
- working tax credit
- welfare rights
How do I access a children’s centre?
There are several different ways:
- By visiting the centre of your choice to ask about sessions provided, or to attend a group or appointment
- By another agency, for example a health visitor, midwife or community group giving out information
- By someone visiting the local community to talk about the services
- By going along with a friend or relative.
What happens next?
If you decide you'd like to use the centre's services, you'll need to complete a registration form. This will tell the centre where you live and how many children you have. It also helps staff to plan services and access further funding in the future. A staff member will explain what you are signing and what will happen to your information.
