North
Lincolnshire Council is making it easier for our visitors to view some of our
frequently updated content.
We
now provide four Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds that contain the most
recent council decisions, news, press releases and all of our recent job vacancies.
What is RSS?
RSS
provides a convenient way to gather and quickly browse information from a variety
of sources. This can include press releases, the latest jobs, or council
decisions.
It
allows you to stay informed by retrieving the latest content from websites you
are interested in, saving you time as you will not need to visit each site individually
for updates.
Small
amounts of content, called 'feeds', are automatically sent to an RSS reader.
Feeds are generally a headline, summary, or preview of the complete content.
Through the RSS reader, feeds from various sources can be scanned with the ability
to access the complete content.
How do I get an RSS reader?
RSS
feed readers (or aggregators) are applications that display feeds from websites.
They update frequently to display the latest version of the feed and can display
feeds from a number of different websites. This provides a quick way to view
a variety of news, events and articles from the websites you are interested
in all in the same place.
You
can download a feed reader over the internet. But feed readers are also built
in to a large number of modern web browser email applications such as Outlook
and Mozilla Thunderbird, and some portal websites including Google, Yahoo and
Microsoft Live.
How to subscribe
to an RSS feed:
RSS
content can be read using software called an ‘RSS reader’, ‘feed reader’ or
an ‘aggregator’. The user subscribes to a feed by entering the feed's link into
the reader or by clicking an RSS icon in a browser that initiates the subscription
process.
When
a feed is available for a section of content on our website, there will be a
link to the feed on the relevant content page, highlighted by an orange RSS
icon.
If
you click on the RSS link you can subscribe to the feed in various ways.
This
will include dragging the URL of the feed into your RSS feed reader or by cutting
and pasting the same URL into a new feed in your RSS feed reader. Most sites
that offer feeds use a similar orange button, but some may just have a normal
web link.
Some
browsers, including Firefox, Opera and Safari, automatically check for feeds
for you when you visit a website, and display an icon when they find one. This
can make subscribing to feeds much easier. For more details on these, please
check their websites.
Disclaimer:
RSS
feeds from a website can also be displayed on other websites as headlines. North
Lincolnshire Council supplies a variety of information in RSS XML feed format
that can be used in this way. Individuals and organisations can use this service
for non-profit making purposes. Use of the above feeds is on the basis that
the text content is presented unchanged from that contained in the RSS XML feed.
