The council installed the bridge on Bridges Road in Scunthorpe as part of the Sustrans Connect2 project that aims to provide a network of cycle routes in Scunthorpe. The bridge was the first of two to be installed.
But vandals are going onto the bridge and throwing stones at oncoming cars causing damage and putting lives in danger.
The Safer Neighbourhoods Partnership will install a camera on the bridge in a bid to catch the culprits.
North Lincolnshire Council spokeswoman, said:
“It is sad that we have had to close the bridge especially when we only installed it a few weeks ago. But our priority is to protect motorists.
“We are trying to find a solution to the problem. In the meantime, the bridge will remain closed until further notice.”
Sustrans Connect2
The scheme is part of the national Sustrans Charity that aims to enable people to make more of everyday journeys by foot, bike or public transport.
The Charity was awarded £50m by the Big Lottery Fund in 2007 to create new walking and cycling routes that overcome everyday journeys.
Once complete, it will enable people to travel by foot or bike from Crosby, over the railway by Brumby Wood Lane and across West Common Lane and Bridges Road to Burringham Road.
Further links will enable people pushing prams, wheelchair users, walkers and cyclists along the greenway and into Central Park and The Pods.
The North Lincolnshire Safer Neighbourhoods Partnership
