North Lincolnshire Domestic Violence Strategy (1 October 2007)

PR 3180

North Lincolnshire Council’s Safer Neighbourhoods Team and Safeguarding Children’s Board are holding a Domestic Violence Consultation event on Tuesday 2 October at the Wortley Hotel, Scunthorpe.

The event starts at 9am and finishes at 4.30pm. The event will form the basis of the development for a future strategy discussing how domestic violence in North Lincolnshire should be tackled.

The day commences with the launch of a DVD for victims of domestic violence by the Mayor of North Lincolnshire, Cllr Tony Ellerby. The DVD is the work of the 'It’s My Right Project' and the North Lincolnshire Youth Service.

Jasvinder Sanghera is speaking at the event. Jasvinder is the author of the book Shame, which tells the story of her fight from a forced marriage. She is also the founder of Karma Nirvana, a refuge in Derbyshire which supports women fleeing from forced marriages.

Pauline Carlile, Cabinet Member for Adult Services, said:

"Domestic violence is an issue that effects everyone, individuals, families and communities. It has devastating effects, particularly with children.

"It is crucial to forward plan matters surrounding such serious issues to try and prevent the potentially horrific outcomes.

"The consultation event is a really good way to listen to the opinions and ideas of a wide range of people with different areas of expertise. Having a selection of knowledge helps to ensure we explore a range of possible plans of action and that we peruse the most effective.

"All agencies attending the consultation are working together for the benefit of North Lincolnshire residents."
