20 -21 Visual Arts Centre in Scunthorpe is proud to show the exciting and innovative exhibition ‘Paper – Steel – Paper’ from 7 October to 25 November 2006.
For her new exhibition renowned artist Susan Stockwell will create art made from recycled paper and steel. The show is based on the gallery building and the local industrial landscape.
The artist has worked with paper products for many years. Four huge paper hangings, made by Susan will fill the former St Johns Church building in Church Square. Although only made out of paper, these art works are based on the four Corus blast furnaces that dominate the local landscape.
Also in the show are giant bales of used paper, drinks cans and plastic bottles. A video of smoke and steam from the steel mill chimneys is also on display. This work seeks to remind viewers of a local environment often over-looked due to familiarity.
Susan makes art about maps, trade, world politics and industry. She showed her work in Europe, China, Japan and across the USA. She also held exhibitions in many major galleries and museums in the UK, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
20-21 Visual Arts Centre is proud to announce that such an acclaimed artist is coming to Scunthorpe. It is also pleased that she has chosen to make work based on the local industrial landscape.
Cllr Ivan Glover, Cabinet Member for Housing and Leisure Services, said:
"I would like to thank the staff at the Visual Arts Centre for all their effort. They have worked extremely hard to bring ‘ Paper – Steel – Paper’ art display to Scunthorpe.
"During her career Susan Stockwell has travelled far and has experienced scenes from all over the world. It is an honour for Scunthorpe to be included in her portfolio of great works. It is something we should all be very proud of.
"20-21 Visual Arts Centre is full of natural light and a wonderful venue to view art work in. Each exhibition features something completely different and the centre was recently featured in the 2006 Gallery Guide.
"I encourage people to come and have a look at this wonderful display. 20-21 Visual Arts Centre is fully accessible to everyone. There is a café, which offers delicious food and an arts and crafts shop to inspire you to try art at home."
